Trailer Trash: Kick-Ass*

The teaser trailer for the Matthew Vaughn-directed comic book adaptation Kick-Ass has come online earlier than was expected and can be watched using the player below! Opening April 16th, the action-adventure stars Nicolas Cage, Aaron Johnson, Lyndsy Fonseca, Mark Strong, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Chloe Moretz.

Based on the comic by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., Kick-Ass tells the story of average teenager Dave Lizewski (Johnson), a comic-book fanboy who decides to take his obsession as inspiration to become a real-life superhero. As any good superhero would, he chooses a new name -- Kick-Ass -- assembles a suit and mask to wear, and gets to work fighting crime. There's only one problem standing in his way: Kick-Ass has absolutely no superpowers.

His life is forever changed as he inspires a subculture of copy cats, is hunted by assorted violent and unpleasant characters, and meets up with a pair of crazed vigilantes, including an 11-year-old sword-wielding dynamo, Hit Girl (Moretz) and her father, Big Daddy (Cage)

Monday Morning Quarterback* : Nov 6-8th, 2009

Robert Zemeckis and Jim Carrey managed to climb their way to the top of the box office this past weekend with their retelling of A Christmas Carol. Audiences responded despite the seemingly early holiday release, and although the opening weekend didn’t quite live up to expectations, it will probably continue to steadily make money over the next two months. Michael Jackson’s This Is It dropped to #2 but still made $14 million, while The Men Who Stare At Goats and The Fourth Kind weren’t far behind. Paranormal Activity fell to #5. Disappointing news for Richard Kelly as his latest film The Box had a pretty lacklustre weekend, earning just $7.8 million, perhaps due to the fact that it was a difficult movie to market. The biggest story, however, appears to be the indie film Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire, which opened at #12 but it made $1.8 million on just 18 screens — the 12th highest per-screen average ever. This is definitely looking like it will continue to build major awards buzz leading up to the Oscars next year.

1. A Christmas Carol — $31M
2. This Is It — $14M
3. The Men Who Stare at Goats — $13.3M
4. The Fourth Kind — $12.5M
5. Paranormal Activity — $8.6M
6. The Box — $7.86M
7. Couples Retreat — $6.43M
8. Law Abiding Citizen — $6.17M
9. Where the Wild Things Are — $4.22M
10. Astro Boy — $2.59M

District 9 : A Review

The Summer of 2009 seems to have been a summer filled with Movies inspired by Toys, and Movies inspired by other movies. Now, however, we finally have a movie that is just plain inspired. District 9 is that movie. Rising from the ashes of the failed Halo movie that was supposed to be directed by Neill Blomkamp, and produced by Peter Jackson comes what could be the sleeper hit of the Summer.

Set in an alternate timeline, not the future, District 9 shows us a world where 30 years previously an alien mothership descends from the reaches of outer space and parks itself over Johannesburg, South Africa. After sitting there for a number of months, humans, curious in their nature, decide to cut their way in.

What they find are Millions of Refugee aliens, worker bees, and the human race set up a camp for the aliens to live until they go home, only they don't.

The Movie picks up with A field officer, Wikus van der Merwe put in charge of evicting the 1.8 million aliens to a new camp, some 120 miles away. While out on Patrol, something terrible goes awry, and Wilkus finds himself on the run from the government, the public, and his old employers, finding sanctuary in the very place he was put in charge to destroy.

Make no mistake, District 9 was obviously influenced by the South Africian policies of Apartheid, which were banished in 1994. Using a budget of only $30 Million and making it seem like they spent $100 million, Blomkamp and Jackson craft a dark tale that breathes new life into the sci fi genre.

Wilkus' journey is one solidly constructed in a deep sense of pathos from beginning to end, and while at the hour and 20 minute mark this movie really shifts into high gear to become a wild action movie, it never looses that emotion.

This movie is so imaginative, and so different, because it take the overdone Alien Invasion threat, and turns it on its head by making Humanity the big threat. Spectulative Fiction doesn't get much better then this folks, go out and see this movie as soon as possible.
